April

The Great Migration · Central and western Serengeti · Low confidence

On the move through the long rains

The wettest month. The herds are moving and the roads are hard work — but you will have the park almost to yourself.

April is the low season for a reason: the long rains are heavy, the black-cotton soil turns to grease, and a good number of camps close entirely.

What you get in exchange is a Serengeti with almost nobody in it, a green and beautiful landscape, superb birding as the migrants arrive, and prices roughly half what they are in August. The herds are somewhere between the southern plains and the Western Corridor, generally strung out in long columns.

We will happily send you in April, but we will make sure you know what you are choosing.

Where to stay this month

Permanent central Serengeti lodges rather than mobile camps, most of which are closed. Check individual camp closure dates carefully.
