A caustic soda lake beneath an active volcano, and the only regular breeding site in East Africa for lesser flamingo.

Natron is not a normal safari stop. It is hot, harsh and strange — a shallow, highly alkaline lake that turns deep red in places from the algae that thrive in it, under the perfect cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the only volcano on earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava.

Almost the entire East African population of lesser flamingo breeds here, precisely because the caustic water keeps predators away. The landscape is the draw as much as the wildlife: escarpments, waterfalls in the gorges, and Maasai communities living in country that looks unlivable.

Add it if you want your trip to include something other than game drives, or if you intend to climb Lengai overnight — a brutal but memorable ascent that starts at midnight.

The wildlife

When to visit

June to October for the easiest road access. It is extremely hot year-round, and the approach can be difficult after heavy rain.
