Safari overview

Not a safari, and not pretending to be. Kikuletwa — locally Chemka — is a geothermal spring in the middle of dry scrub country, feeding a pool of water so clear that the fish and the tree roots at four metres look close enough to touch.

It is a rope swing, a picnic, and a few hours of doing nothing in warm water under fig trees. Which, in the middle of a demanding itinerary or the day after coming down Kilimanjaro, is worth more than another park.

We go early, before the day gets busy. Bring a towel and something to swim in.

Safari highlights

01 Water clear enough to see four metres down
02 A rope swing and a fig-tree canopy
03 Picnic lunch beside the pool
04 Under two hours from Moshi
05 The ideal recovery day after Kilimanjaro

Day by day

Every day below can be moved, lengthened or dropped. This is how we would run it.

Collected after breakfast and driven out through sugar-cane and maize, then onto a rough track that is the reason we use a 4×4. The springs appear without warning: a bright turquoise pool in dry scrub, ringed by fig trees with roots reaching down into it.

Swim, use the rope swing, eat lunch beside the water, and leave in the middle of the afternoon before the light goes.

  • Transfer from Moshi or Arusha
  • Swimming and the rope swing
  • Picnic lunch by the pool
  • Add the Materuni waterfall and a coffee farm

How our pricing works. Prices are indicative and move with your travel dates, group size, the camps that still have space and any upgrades you choose. The per-person cost drops as the group grows, because the vehicle and guide are shared. Ask us for a personalised quotation and you will get an exact figure, not a range.
