Safari overview

Not every honeymoon has three weeks in it. This one is six days and is built to feel longer than that: three parks rather than five, two nights in the Serengeti, and no day that starts before it needs to except the crater morning.

The difference between this and the standard six-day route is mostly in the details we arrange rather than the map. A private dinner away from the mess tent. A room with a view worth waking up for rather than the one nearest the path. Camps told in advance that it is a honeymoon, which reliably produces flowers, a bottle of something cold and a bath run in an inconvenient but memorable place.

If you want the Indian Ocean afterwards, we add Zanzibar or Pemba on the end — most couples do, and the eleven-day version below is the usual shape.

  1. Arusha — 50 km, 50 minutes
  2. Tarangire — 130 km, 2 hours 15
  3. Central Serengeti — 200 km, 4 hours with stops
  4. Crater rim — 145 km, 3 hours plus game viewing
  5. Kilimanjaro International Airport — 230 km, Crater morning, then 4 hours

Safari highlights

01 Private vehicle and guide throughout, never a shared seat
02 Two nights in the Serengeti so nothing is rushed
03 A private bush dinner away from the camp mess
04 Honeymoon arrangements made with each camp in advance
05 A full morning on the Ngorongoro Crater floor
06 Extends naturally into Zanzibar or Pemba

Day by day

Every day below can be moved, lengthened or dropped. This is how we would run it.

Met at the airport and driven to a plantation suite among the coffee bushes on the Meru slopes. A quiet first night, deliberately — the safari starts properly tomorrow and there is no advantage in beginning it tired.
