Safari overview
This is the northern circuit done properly rather than quickly. Eight days gives you enough time to spend two full nights in the Serengeti instead of one, to descend into the Ngorongoro Crater without rushing back out, and to include two things most eight-day itineraries skip: a morning hunting with the Hadzabe at Lake Eyasi, and the coffee farms below Kilimanjaro on the last day.
You start gently in Arusha, work west through Tarangire’s elephant country and into the Serengeti, then come back east over the highlands. The driving is real — this is a big country and the roads inside the parks are corrugated — but no single day is punishing, and every long transfer is also a game drive.
It suits first-time visitors who want the headline parks without feeling processed, and it works in both the dry and the green season.
- Arusha — 50 km, 50 minutes
- Tarangire — 120 km, 2 hours
- Central Serengeti — 185 km, 3 hours plus game driving

- Lake Eyasi — 65 km, 1 hour after the crater
- Arusha — 185 km, 3 hours
- Kilimanjaro International Airport — 110 km, 2 hours in total
Safari highlights
Day by day
Every day below can be moved, lengthened or dropped. This is how we would run it.
Your guide meets you inside the terminal at Kilimanjaro, and you are at the lodge within the hour. Arusha sits at 1,400 metres on the slopes of Mount Meru, so the evening is cooler than most people expect after the flight.
We use the evening for the safari briefing: the route, what to expect at each park, how the days will run, and any last adjustments. If you arrive early there is time for the Cultural Heritage Centre or simply the pool.

Or a similar camp of the same standard, such as Under The Shade Safari Lodge, depending on availability.
An early start south-west, through Maasai grazing land, and into the park by mid-morning. Tarangire is baobab country — thousands of them, some over a thousand years old — and in the dry months the river running through it draws elephant from a much wider area than the park itself.
You game drive through the middle of the day along the river, where the concentration is highest, then work back out towards the highlands in the late afternoon.

- Elephant and baobab photography in the late light

Tonight · Lodge · Classic
Or a similar camp of the same standard, such as Farm of Dreams Lodge, depending on availability.
You climb over the Ngorongoro highlands and drop onto the plains — the moment the country opens out is one people remember. There is a stop at the Olduvai Gorge on the way, where the Leakeys found some of the oldest hominin remains yet recovered.
Two full nights in the central Serengeti gives you four game drives around the Seronera valley, which holds resident lion prides year-round and some of the most reliable leopard sightings in Tanzania. In February the herds are on the plains to the south; from July they are up in the north.
- Olduvai Gorge stop and museum
- Game drives in the Seronera valley
- Sunrise and late-afternoon drives on both days
- Hot-air balloon flight at dawn — book ahead

Tonight · Tented camp · Classic
Or a similar camp of the same standard, such as Kon Tiki Serengeti Camp, depending on availability.
Back east across the plains with a game drive as you go, then up onto the crater rim in the afternoon. Standing at the viewpoint and looking six hundred metres down onto the floor, with the whole ecosystem laid out below, is worth the drive on its own.
You descend early the following morning — see the next day — so tonight is about resting and getting to bed at a reasonable hour.

Tonight · Lodge · Classic
Or a similar camp of the same standard, such as Farm of Dreams Lodge, depending on availability.
You are on the descent road at opening, which puts you on the floor before the queue forms. Six hours in the crater usually produces lion, hyena, elephant, hippo, buffalo and enormous numbers of plains game — and, if the day goes your way, black rhino at distance.
Out by early afternoon and down to Lake Eyasi, a soda lake in the Rift below the highlands, where you overnight ahead of an early start.
- Full morning game drive on the crater floor
- Picnic lunch at the hippo pool
- Transfer to Lake Eyasi

- Travel time
- 1 hour after the crater

Tonight · Lodge · Classic
A very early start to join a Hadzabe hunting party at first light. The Hadzabe are one of the last hunter-gatherer peoples in Africa and still hunt with bow and arrow — you walk with them, and it is genuinely strenuous rather than a performance. Afterwards there is usually time with the Datoga blacksmiths who make their arrowheads.
Then east to Lake Manyara for an afternoon drive through the groundwater forest, and back to Arusha in the evening.
- Dawn hunt with a Hadzabe family
- Datoga blacksmiths
- Afternoon game drive in Lake Manyara
- Canopy walkway at Manyara
- Drive

- 3 hours
- Overnight
- Arusha

Tonight · Lodge · Classic
Or a similar camp of the same standard, such as Under The Shade Safari Lodge, depending on availability.
Rather than sit in a hotel waiting for an evening flight, you spend the last morning on the Chagga smallholdings below Kilimanjaro: a walk to the Materuni waterfall, then a coffee farm where you pick, husk, roast and grind by hand and drink the result.
Lunch is local, and your guide has you at the airport in good time. If you are heading on to Zanzibar instead, we transfer you to the domestic terminal.
- Materuni waterfall walk
- Coffee farm tour and tasting
- Airport transfer
- Extend to Zanzibar — ask us

Questions we get asked
Yes. You have your own vehicle, your own guide and your own schedule. We do not put unrelated guests together unless you specifically ask us to, in order to share costs.
That is rather the point. Every itinerary on this site is a starting draft. Add nights, drop a park, change the comfort level, start from Zanzibar instead — tell us what you want and we will rebuild it and re-cost it.
A Toyota Land Cruiser adapted for safari: pop-up roof, charging points, a cool box, and enough space that nobody sits in a middle seat. Windows open fully on both sides.
For July to September, nine to twelve months if you want the better camps. For the green season, three to four months is usually enough. We can occasionally do much shorter notice — ask.
It is customary but not compulsory. As a guide, most guests give their driver-guide around US$20–30 per vehicle per day, and leave something in the camp staff box.
