Safari overview
The shortest itinerary on this site, and about as short as a safari can be while remaining worth doing.
Two parks in two days, both within easy reach of Arusha, with one night in between. Tarangire on the first day for elephants and baobabs, Lake Manyara on the second for forest, escarpment and flamingo. No crater, because the crater deserves a whole morning and its own drive.
It suits a spare weekend, a stopover, or the day either side of a conference. If you have three days, take the three-day version instead and add the crater — it is the single biggest upgrade available to a short trip.
- Mto wa Mbu — 170 km, 2 hours in, 1 hour out
- Arusha or the airport — 130 km, 2 hours 30 back to Arusha
Safari highlights
Day by day
Every day below can be moved, lengthened or dropped. This is how we would run it.
Away from Arusha early and into Tarangire by mid-morning for a full day along the river. In the dry season this is the best elephant viewing on the northern circuit and the baobabs make it the most distinctive landscape too.
Out in the late afternoon to a tented lodge on the plains between the two parks.

Or a similar camp of the same standard, such as Marera Valley Lodge, depending on availability.
A short transfer to the Manyara gate and a morning in the forest. Blue monkeys and baboons in the figs, elephant on the flats, and flamingo on the lake when the water level suits.
Lunch, then back east to Arusha or the airport.

Questions we get asked
Yes. You have your own vehicle, your own guide and your own schedule. We do not put unrelated guests together unless you specifically ask us to, in order to share costs.
That is rather the point. Every itinerary on this site is a starting draft. Add nights, drop a park, change the comfort level, start from Zanzibar instead — tell us what you want and we will rebuild it and re-cost it.
A Toyota Land Cruiser adapted for safari: pop-up roof, charging points, a cool box, and enough space that nobody sits in a middle seat. Windows open fully on both sides.
For July to September, nine to twelve months if you want the better camps. For the green season, three to four months is usually enough. We can occasionally do much shorter notice — ask.
It is customary but not compulsory. As a guide, most guests give their driver-guide around US$20–30 per vehicle per day, and leave something in the camp staff box.
Not in two days, properly. The crater needs its own morning and its own drive up to the rim the night before. Add one day and take the three-day version — it is the best value upgrade on the whole site.
