Wildebeest on the move — the animal the Great Migration is built around.

What happens when the migration is late

Great Migration · By Steven Njau · 31 May 2026 · 2 min read

The herds do not read the calendar. Here is how we plan around that rather than pretending otherwise.

Every migration map you have seen shows tidy arrows with months attached. Those maps describe an average year. There is no obligation on any wildebeest to produce an average year.

What actually drives it

Grass and rain, in that order. The herds move towards new growth, and new growth follows rainfall. When the rains come early, everything shifts forward. When they fail, animals sit in one place for weeks or move in unexpected directions.

The population is also not a single mass. It strings out over enormous distances, so the front can be crossing the Mara River while a third of the animals are still well to the south.

What this means for a booking made a year ahead

It means anyone who tells you exactly where the herds will be on a specific date eleven months out is guessing and hoping you will not remember the conversation.

What is reliable: in most years, calving happens on the southern plains around February, the columns move west and north through the middle of the year, the Mara River crossings run from roughly July into September, and the herds drift back south from late October.

Most years. Not every year.

How we plan around it

Camps that move. Mobile camps relocate seasonally to stay with the herds. Booking one is materially better than booking a permanent lodge in a fixed spot and hoping the animals come to it.

Enough nights. Three or four nights in the right region converts luck into reasonable expectation. One night converts it into a coin toss.

Flexibility built in. We hold the exact camp assignment as late as the booking terms allow, so that a late season can be reacted to rather than absorbed.

A trip that works anyway. This is the real answer. The northern Serengeti in crossing season is superb whether or not the river obliges on your particular days — resident lion, leopard country, and far fewer vehicles than the centre. If the whole trip collapses without one specific event, it was planned badly.

The conversation we would rather have

Tell us your dates first, and we will tell you what is likely, what is possible and what is not. That order produces better trips than choosing the spectacle first and then trying to bend the calendar around it.
